Name That Tune works because it’s familiar, requires zero setup, and keeps guests entertained for exactly 15 minutes—the goldilocks zone where no one gets bored and the dance floor waits. Skip it if your crowd is under 30 and expects the DJ to drop bangers immediately, or if your reception is already packed with structured games.

How it works

The DJ plays 8–15 song clips (5–10 seconds each) spanning different eras and genres. Guests—solo or in teams—write down their guesses for song title and/or artist. Quick round of answers, a few laughs at the wrong guesses, announce a winner, move on. No judges, no drama, takes 12–18 minutes total.

How to set it up

Confirm with your DJ (if hired): most will run this for free as part of their standard game rotation. Ask them to lean into crowd-pleasers from the ’70s–’90s plus 2–3 current hits. If they push back, they’re lazy—find a different DJ.
If you’re DIY-ing it (no DJ): grab a portable Bluetooth speaker (Anker Soundcore, ~$50–80 on Amazon) and create a Spotify playlist labeled “Name That Tune.”
Print answer sheets (~$0.05 each): one table per sheet, two columns (Song / Artist). Print 20–30 copies. Staples, 8.5×11”, 500 sheets = $5. You’ll use 10% of that.
Source pens: you already have a bowl of them. If not, Dollar Tree, $1 for a pack of 12.
Assign a scorekeeper (best man, maid of honor, or a detail-oriented aunt): someone reads answers aloud, tallies points. Their main job is not taking it too seriously.
Set up the speaker 30 minutes before dinner ends, when people are loose but not yet deep in dancing. Crank it loud enough to hear clearly in a room of 80–150 people.
Play clips in a sensible order: start with an easy one (Beyoncé, Beatles) to build confidence, throw in 2–3 tricky ones in the middle, end with a recent hit everyone knows. ~90 seconds per song (play clip, read answers, move to next).

Common mistakes

Playing 20+ songs: attention dies after 12. People want to dance, not sit through a karaoke audition.
Mixing in deep cuts or one-hit wonders from 1987: Guests blank out. Stick to songs people actually heard on the radio.
No prize: “Winner gets bragging rights!” is what losing teams hear. A $10–15 gift card to a bar near the venue or a silly trophy from Dollar Tree changes the whole vibe.
Terrible audio: If the speaker is tinny or the song is muffled, no one can guess anything. Test it beforehand.

Variations by budget

Free: Use your phone (or DJ’s system) and Spotify. Skip printed sheets—call out answers verbally, tally on a napkin. Works fine for receptions under 60 people.

$ (~$10–30): Print basic answer sheets ($5), grab pens ($1), source a small prize—$10 gift card or a fun bottle of something local. If you need audio, a used Bluetooth speaker runs $30–50 secondhand (Facebook Marketplace).

$$ (~$30–100): Invest in a better speaker ($70–100, Anker Soundcore or similar), print branded answer sheets with your names/date on them (Minted or local print shop, $15–20 for 30 copies), offer a nicer prize—a good bottle of wine (~$20) or a gift card to a restaurant guests actually want to visit. Feels more polished without being pretentious.
