The honest take
Cornhole works because it requires zero explanation, gets drunk people off their phones, and you can actually DIY the boards for under $40. It falls flat at formal sit-down receptions where guests are in heels and black tie—save it for casual outdoor events where nobody’s dressed for statues.
How it works
Two players (or teams) stand about 15 feet apart and take turns tossing 1-pound cloth bean bags at a wooden board with a hole in it. Hitting the board earns 1 point, getting a bag through the hole earns 3 points. First to 21 wins. Games typically last 5–10 minutes, so you can run tournaments all evening.
How to set it up
-
Build or buy the boards (timing: 3–4 weeks before).
- DIY route: Buy a 2×4 board, plywood, PVC pipe, and wood stain from Home Depot (~$35 per board). Search “cornhole DIY plans”—thousands of YouTube videos walk you through cutting the hole (4–6 inches diameter) and angling the board slightly upward. Takes 2–3 hours per pair if you have basic tools.
- Premade route: Amazon, Dick’s Sporting Goods (~$60–120 per set of two boards). Lower quality but zero assembly.
-
Get bean bags (timing: 4 weeks before).
- DIY: 8 canvas bags (4 per color) from Amazon (~$15/set). Stuff with dried corn or polymer pellets.
- Premade: Comes with most board sets.
-
Set up the courts (timing: 1–2 hours before reception).
- Space two boards 15 feet apart on your lawn or patio. Mark the line where players stand with tape or spray paint.
- If you have space, run two courts simultaneously—keeps the line moving and gets more people playing at once.
-
Assign a bracket or open play (timing: cocktail hour onward).
- Keep it simple. Use a basic single-elimination tournament bracket posted on a sign, or just let people challenge winners (no bracket needed).
What to prepare in advance
- Boards are built/purchased and tested (confirm the hole is the right size—too big and it’s not satisfying, too small and nobody wins)
- Bean bags are stuffed, counted, and in a bag to transport
- Boundaries marked or clear (tape, rope, or just agreed-upon distances)
- Setup location scouted (flat ground, no major obstacles, visible to guests)
- Someone assigned to run the bracket or reset games (ideally a groomsman or usher, not you)
- Backup plan if ground is wet or muddy (move indoors on a hard surface, or skip that day)
Common mistakes
- Placing boards in the middle of the dance floor. You’re competing with the DJ and creating a bottleneck. Put cornhole in a separate lawn or patio area.
- Boards that are too wobbly or uneven. Test them before the day. A leg that wobbles kills the fun and frustrates players.
- Not enough space between the boards and other activity. People need room to stand back, step forward, and spectate without running into cocktail tables.
- Forgetting to bring the bean bags or losing them in the yard. Bring a mesh bag to collect them after each game and inventory them beforehand.
Variations by budget
- Free: Borrow boards and bags from a friend or family member. Works if you know someone who already plays.
- $ (~$10–30): DIY the boards using scrap wood or cheap Home Depot lumber. Drill the hole yourself and use canvas bags stuffed with dried corn from the grocery store.
- $$ (~$30–100): Buy one pre-made set (two boards) from Amazon or Dick’s. Rent a second set if you want two simultaneous courts (~$40–60/day rental in most areas).
