Riviera Maya is one of the most popular destination wedding locations in the world for American couples, and for good reason — it’s close, affordable relative to Europe, warm year-round, and has mature wedding infrastructure. The all-inclusive resort system makes budgeting simple (if not always cheap).
It’s not a romantic boutique destination. It’s large-scale, well-organized, and built for exactly this purpose. If that’s what you want, it delivers reliably. If you want something off the beaten path, look elsewhere.
Two very different approaches
All-inclusive resort wedding (e.g. Secrets, Zoëtry, Excellence):
- Most popular option. Resort handles venue, catering, décor packages, accommodation.
- Cost: $10,000–$30,000 wedding package + guest room bookings (rooms often partially offset cost)
- Pros: Easy to plan from abroad, one vendor to manage, guests have full resort amenities
- Cons: Less personalizable, standardized décor, shared resort space
Private venue (boutique hotel, beach club, private estate):
- More control, more distinctive setting
- Cost: €15,000–$50,000+ depending on venue and headcount
- Pros: Unique, fully yours
- Cons: More vendors to coordinate, more complex

When to go
- November–April: Dry season. Warm (26–30°C), low humidity, clear skies.
- May–October: Rainy season + hurricane season. Rain usually falls in short afternoon bursts rather than all day — but hurricane risk is real from August–October.
- Most popular months: January–March and November. Book far ahead.
Practical notes
- Tipping culture: Mexico tips are expected and significant. Budget $15–$20/head for staff tips at a dinner event.
- Legal ceremony: Using a Mexican civil registrar requires documents and advance preparation. Most couples do legal ceremony at home.
- Currency: US dollars widely accepted in resort areas. No need to convert for most vendors.
- Transfers: Cancún airport to resort is 1–2 hours depending on location. Coordinate group transfers.
